I was reading a story of a small-town Japanese mayor who made a plea for help on YouTube after the tsunami devastated his town. The response was overwhelming. And it made me think.
We are constantly fed a skewed perception of ourselves as a species. We are selfish and self-interested by nature, we’re told. Sinful by default. But there is so much evidence to the contrary. It is all around us. Human nature is also compassionate, empathetic, generous, and cooperative. We are told that we live in a world of scarcity and competition, but really, we can also say that we live in a world of abundance and camaraderie. It’s all about how you look at it.
